The rule

Ser + participle (+ por)

ser + participio + por…

The participle agrees with the subject in gender and number: La catedral fue construida en el siglo XIII. The agent is introduced with por: El Quijote fue escrito por Cervantes.

Register

This construction sounds formal: it is typical of news, history and science. In conversation Spanish speakers prefer the se passive or the active voice.

  • La noticia fue publicada ayer por varios periódicos.The news was published yesterday by several newspapers.

The rule

Se + third-person verb

se vende piso · se venden pisos

The verb agrees with the thing: Se vende piso — Se venden pisos. This is how ads, recipes and instructions are written.

No agent

The agent is not mentioned in this construction: “se alquilan pisos por el dueño” is wrong. If you need the agent, use the ser passive or the active voice.

With a modal verb and an infinitive, the verb agrees with the object of the infinitive: Se pueden ver las islas, Se deben pagar las facturas.

People: with or without a

Unspecified people without a — passive, plural verb: Se buscan camareros. Specific people with a — impersonal se, singular verb: Se busca a los responsables.

  • Se buscan camareros con experiencia.Experienced waiters wanted.
  • En este restaurante se preparan las mejores tapas de la ciudad.The best tapas in town are made in this restaurant.
  • Se alquila habitación en el centro.Room to let in the town centre.

Impersonal

The rule

Always singular

se vive · se busca a… · se puede + inf.

When there is no object, or the object is people introduced with a, the verb is always singular: En España se cena tarde; Aquí se vive bien; Se busca a los responsables. A verb + infinitive with no object too: Se puede aparcar aquí.

Reflexive verbs and ser

With reflexive verbs a second se is impossible (“se se levanta”) — use uno instead: Uno se acostumbra a todo.

With ser and estar impersonal se is possible and sounds general: Cuando se es joven, todo parece fácil.

Ser or estar + participle

Ser + participle is an action: La puerta fue abierta por el portero. Estar + participle is a state, a result: Cuando llegamos, la puerta ya estaba abierta.

  • El puente fue inaugurado por el alcalde.The bridge was opened by the mayor.
  • Se atiende a los clientes por orden.Customers are served in turn.
  • Cuando llegamos, la puerta ya estaba abierta.When we arrived, the door was already open.

Tip

How to choose

Need the agent? → ser + participio + por. Agent unimportant and there is a thing? → se + verb agreeing with the thing. No thing, or people with a? → se + singular. Describing a result? → estar.

Examples

The ser passive

  • Este edificio fue diseñado por un arquitecto japonés.This building was designed by a Japanese architect.
  • Los heridos fueron trasladados al hospital.The injured were taken to hospital.
  • La ley ha sido aprobada por el Parlamento.The law has been passed by Parliament.
  • El acusado será juzgado en marzo.The defendant will be tried in March.

The se passive

  • Primero se cortan las cebollas y se fríen en aceite.First the onions are chopped and fried in oil.
  • Aquí se habla inglés.English spoken here.
  • Las entradas se venden en la taquilla.Tickets are sold at the box office.
  • El año pasado se construyeron tres hospitales nuevos.Three new hospitals were built last year.
  • Desde aquí se pueden ver las montañas.You can see the mountains from here.

Impersonal se

  • En este barrio se vive muy bien.Life is very good in this neighbourhood.
  • Se dice que el alcalde va a dimitir.It is said that the mayor is going to resign.
  • Aquí no se puede aparcar.You can’t park here.
  • Se premiará a los mejores alumnos.The best students will be given prizes.
  • Cuando se es joven, todo parece posible.When you’re young, everything seems possible.
  • Uno se acostumbra a todo.You get used to anything.

Estar + participle

  • Las tiendas están cerradas los domingos.The shops are closed on Sundays.
  • El informe ya está terminado.The report is already finished.
