Reported speech

How to report what someone said, asked or requested: tense shifts, si and question words, words for place and time

Estilo indirecto

Tense shift

When tenses shift

If the reporting verb is in the present (dice, pregunta), the tense does not change: “Estoy cansada” → Dice que está cansada.

If the reporting verb is past (dijo, me preguntó), tenses usually move one step back.

What each tense becomes

When the shift is optional

If what was said is still true, the present may stay: Me dijo que vive en Madrid (and still does). When the situation is over, the shift is required.

Questions

Two kinds of questions

A yes/no question is introduced with si: “¿Tienes hambre?” → Me preguntó si tenía hambre. A question with a question word keeps that word, with its accent: “¿Dónde vives?” → Me preguntó dónde vivía.

A reported question has no question marks and no inverted word order. In speech people often put que before the question word: Me preguntó que dónde vivía.

What introduces the question

Yes / no question: si = “whether”

preguntó si · quería saber si · no sé si

Question with a question word: the word keeps its accent

qué · quién · dónde · cuándo · cómo · cuánto · cuál · por qué
