Present tense: regular verbs

Regular verbs in the present tense: hablar, comer, vivir

Presente: -ar, -er, -ir

Endings

Spanish verbs fall into three groups by their ending: -ar, -er, -ir.

Drop the ending to get the stem: habl-ar → habl-. Then add the ending for the person.

-er and -ir are almost the same. Verbs in -er and -ir share all endings except “we” and “you all”: comemos — vivimos, coméis — vivís.

A common mistake is giving -er verbs the -a ending: it is ella come, not ella coma.

The pronoun is often left out, because the ending already shows who acts. Hablo español — “I speak Spanish”.

The three groups in use

  • Comemos a las dos.We have lunch at two.
  • Mis amigos viven en Valencia. My friends live in Valencia.
  • ¿Lees mucho?Do you read a lot?
